The granny square is crochet’s most famous motif, and for good reason: it uses only chains, slip stitches and double crochet, it grows quickly, and it is the perfect way to use up leftover yarn. This pattern uses US terms.
You will need
- Worsted weight yarn in 1 to 3 colours
- 5 mm (H-8) hook
- Scissors and a yarn needle
Pattern
Start: ch 4 and sl st into the first ch to form a ring (or use a magic ring).
Round 1: ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, *3 dc in ring, ch 2; rep from * 2 more times. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (4 clusters of 3 dc, 4 corner spaces)
Round 2: sl st across to the next ch-2 corner space. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same corner space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner space, ch 1; rep from * 2 more times. Join to the top of the beginning ch-3.
Round 3: sl st across to the next corner space. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same corner, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 space, ch 1; rep from * 2 more times. Join.
Keep growing: every new round, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner and 3 dc in each ch-1 space along the sides, with ch 1 between clusters.
Granny’s tip: To change colour, finish the round, fasten off, then join the new colour in any corner space and start the next round there. It hides the join beautifully.
